Roberta McKercher is a landmark figure in the Wood River Valley's history and lore.

In the mid-20th century, from her post as a reporter for the local paper, she helped many local organizations thrive by writing stories that covered the events of Little League, the Days of the Old West parade, the Hailey Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club and many more. She was especially dedicated to celebrating the activities and accomplishments of the school children.

Keeping her finger on the pulse of the valley meant attending many social events--potluck suppers, receptions and celebrations. It helped that she was a noted and enthusiastic cook. She brought her best efforts to these social events and collected recipes from friends who also brought their best. The recipes she jotted down in her reporter's notebook make up this book.

The book also collects the stories and memories the people of the Valley tell about Roberta. Short essays tell of her work with the newspaper, the Rotary, and the clubs and lodges that were the heart of the community at that time.
The book begins with her locally famous Lemon Meringue Pie and other desserts. The Applesauce Cake is especially good, as is the Gingerbread with Orange Sauce. Fool-proof Rhubarb Crisp is another favorite.

Main courses cover everything from Ham Loaf with Horseradish or Mustard Sauce to Steak Madrid, a tangy dish that begins with "frying out" bacon and ends with a dash of sherry. If you want to organize a barbecue for 3,000, that's in here too.

A highlight of the Sides and Salads section is Marvelous Mushroom, a quirky, mustard-rich dish that is absolutely delicious.

Altogether this handsome book includes 100 successful recipes and lots of lore about Roberta and the Wood River Valley in the old days.
